Some Contra-Indications

to a Home Birth


  • Serious medical problems:
    Heart disease
    High blood pressure
    Diabetes
    Anaemia
    Kidney disease
    Severe urinary or genital infection
    Obesity
  • Heavy smoker
  • Polyhydramnios - where there is too much amniotoic fluid
  • Prematurity - where the baby comes before 37 weeks of pregnancy
  • Post maturity - where the baby comes after 42 weeks of pregnancy
  • Multiple births, e.g. twins, triplets, etc.
  • Breech position - where the baby is coming bottom or feet first
  • Babies that are not head first, i.e. lying sideways or obliquely
  • A baby that has not been growing well in the womb
  • Placental problems (Abruption) - if part of the placenta separates
  • Praevia - when the placenta lies in front of the baby
